The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) provides around 1.3 million trips per day thanks to a 71-km metro network spread over four lines and made up of 68 stations, combined with a network of 225 bus lines.

The STM employs more than 10,000 people, making it the 15th largest company in Quebec. It also accounts for more than 80% of public transit trips in the Montréal area and more than 70% of all trips in Québec.

Predicting ridership to improve social distancing

The STM called upon Moov AI to assist them in realizing an AI project to inform customers about the number of passengers present in the trains of the metro’s orange line. This data is displayed both on their website and the Métrovision screens on the platforms of the metro stations.

The predicted traffic in each train car is also indicated, such that passengers can position themselves in front of the right doors and choose the less crowded train cars.

We provided technical and methodological support and advice to the STM’s data specialists and developers throughout production of the first version of the model.

Thanks to these lessons, their team subsequently deployed a new version of the AI model based on real-time data from the orange line cars to better predict traffic in the metro.
